Forever An 80’s Lady

IMG_9687

I am a true child of the 80s. With 3 older sisters who were becoming teenagers in the late 80s, I have a lot of fond pop-culture influences and memories in my life at an early age. I remember having living room sleepovers with my sisters, staying up all night watching John Hughes movies regularly, with The Breakfast Club on repeat. My 2 Dads, Who’s The Boss, or The Facts of Life, anyone?

I see you, John Cusack! And I’ve got your $2, right here…

Can we also talk about how amazing action movies were in the 80s? BADASS action films like Big Trouble in Little China, Red Dawn, and Roadhouse are definitely on rotation in this household.

Because of my nostalgia for the 80s, I will always be a fan of 80s inspired art, dress, music, and film. I LOVE that shows like Stranger Things are back in style and the fact that I stumbled upon this Rubik’s cube mural in the streets of SF.  I have also been listening to a lot of CCFX lately as well, which is very much influenced by The Cure. Even my Smiths-obsessed brother in law approves!

Emily’s 80s Favorites:

  • John Hughes classics like The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller, and Pretty in Pink
  • New Wave bands Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure
  • Kooky movies such as Overboard, Mannequin, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
  • Sequins, bright colored patterns, pointy toe pumps, and gaudy earrings
  • PATRICK SWAYZE ANYTHING! THE BRAT PACK!
  • Camping movies and TV shows that made camping (or summer camp) look SO cool and fun, like Meatballs, The Great Outdoors, and Summer Rental
  • Other classics such as Adventures in Babysitting, Summer School, The Goonies, Heathers, Back to the Future, Footloose, The Thing, Beetlejuice, AND MANY MOARRRR!

Man, do I love the 80s ❤

Tune Talk: Disco Delight

How has it been that I’ve had this blog for over a year and haven’t posted yet about tunes? I as a DJ have failed you! I LOVED making mix tapes for my friends and boyfriends when I was in middle and high school. Waiting for the exact moment to press play at the start of the song on the radio was exhilarating.  It took anywhere from 3-6 hours of listening to the radio to create one tape. Ahhh sweet satisfaction.

After Napster boomed and iTunes came about, it was easy (AND legal…AHEM) to download songs, create playlists, and burn CDs. I did this religiously. Making personalized CDs was my jam and if you got one you were hella important to me. ❤ I always wanted to work on soundtracking for films, but that’s a job usually reserved for   THEE director, and one doesn’t really get a job working on soundtracks unless you are a musician and composer and compile your own score. It’s no wonder that I became a DJ so that I could explore songs and share them with people for their own enjoyment.

ENTER DISCO. Ahhhh the glamorous life of Disco. I love it all. The glitz. The lights. The vibe. How it’s ALL INCLUSIVE – any sexual orientation, race, or gender can enjoy it (though it was mocked largely by white cis-gendered males who loved rock n roll and felt threatened by their own homophobia, but THAT will be for a later post). I never knew how much I needed or loved disco, until I came to San Francisco. THERE ARE SO MANY JAMZ I don’t even know where to begin. But if you follow me on Spotify, you can explore my Disco Delight playlist below.

Get lost in disco, envision yourself on the dancefloor with the lights, the people, the energy of the tunes! Ahhhh. Speaking of disco parties, Go Bang! is San Francisco’s BEST disco party, and tomorrow is the 9th anniversary! My bud and Bedazzler better half, Sergio, taught me how to mix and I’ve DJed Go Bang many times in the past. What a wonderful celebration that this party has been around just shy of a decade. WOW! That’s impressive. He throws it with legendary disco DJ, Steve Fabus, who has been behind the decks since the 70’s in Chicago, NYC, and SF, and their good friend Prince Wolf. The people who attend this party are amazing, the music literally RULES, and it feels like a time capsule – transporting you back in time to another dimension where love is love is love and everyone is equal on the dance floor.

Can I just also say that disco fashion is AMAZING and always plays an influence with my wardrobe – velvet, glitter, gold, SEQUINS! Need I say more?!

More talk of tunes will be had in the future, xo.

escape from san francisco, halloween 2k16

This Halloween I fulfilled my dream of being the incredible Joanna Stayton, played by Goldie Hawn, from Overboard! I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH Y’ALL and have been thinking about doing this costume for YEARS #overboardforever. What’s great is that John loves Kurt Russell (as do I, hello HOTTIE ALERT!) and decided to be Snake Plissken from Escape from New York. We thought that it would be more recognizable for him to wear an eyepatch and go for Snake’s look because if we weren’t standing next to each other while he was Dean Proffitt, he would just be wearing plaid and would look similar to his everyday self (I guess he could have worn overalls and carried a tool box but truth be told, John doesn’t love Overboard the way that I do (HOW DARE HE) and he wanted to be Snake. COMPROMISE people! That’s what love is all about ❤ )

Don’t we look GOOD?!

The point is, we both were characters we loved while representing a real life powerhouse in the love department. Kurt and Goldie are hands down my favorite celebrity couple and a great inspiration for relationships everywhere!

We ended up going on the Sunset Sound System boat party to celebrate Halloween (on top of another house party the night before). The Sunset Crew are a great group of local underground house + techno DJs that have been throwing the best parties (that happen to fall on Sundays) for over 20 years in the Bay Area. The boat parties are a ton of fun, are usually 3 floors, and feature edgy DJs from Berlin to NYC and all over the world (talk about LEGIT). This year I was STOKED to hear Prosumer. AND since I was on a boat, all night I got to say things like:

  • THE ENTIRE CIVILIZED WORLD KNOWS THAT ALL CLOSETS ARE MADE OF CEDAR!
  • Andrew, are you gonna bring me my lemon or do I have to squeeze it from my hat?
  • Caviar should be round, and hard, and of adequate size, and should burst in your mouth at *precisely* the right moment.
  • I was a SHORT…FAT…SLUT!

I made the jacket from a white satin robe, shoulder pads, gold rope, gold tassel ribbon, and sequins.

All in all it was a pretty successful Halloween weekend. People loved our costumes, we hungout with our fun friends, listened to great tunes, and got to ride a huge boat around the Bay!

Just for fun, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite clips. Hope you all had a Happy Halloween! Now I have to start brainstorming what I want to be next year…

Gaying the weekend away

Last Friday was the birthday party of my BeDazzler better half, Sergio! And what better way to celebrate than by having a FULL BLOWN happy hour, djed by your best musical friends, at a gay bar?! Sergio plans a similar bday party every year so it was a grand ole time, as was expected, at his favorite place The Powerhouse!

My favorite part about djing at The Powerhouse is that I get to play behind a cage (you can kinda see it behind me to my right in the bottom photo). Also, there is only one big open bathroom (and it’s usually filled with mostly men) so I have to ask someone to stand guard if I need to take a pee break (ya know, because I have a VAGINA).

I love playing with Sergio as part of The BeDazzlers and thoroughly enjoyed curating his bday music selection! Also, the lovely Gareth Gooch was the photog of the evening. He always takes fabulous event pics and is the sweetest.

On Sunday I was asked to play for the season closer of Daytime Realness – the SCREAMSON FINALE, over at El Rio. I jumped on the opportunity immediately because I just love Stanley Frank. He has amazing music selection that influenced me back when I first started to dj. He doesn’t live in SF anymore but comes up from LA occasionally so it was fun to play together again! Not to mention, I have a drag crush on Heklina! SHE IS SO AMAZING if you love drag and live in the Bay area and DON’T know of Heklina – GET ON THAT! Sergio and I see Golden Girls: The Christmas Episodes every Holiday season with our friend, Brian (ITS TRADITION PEOPLE) staring Heklina as Dorothy OF COURSE. (But more on THAT later…)

It rained a ton on Sunday which caused a smaller crowd, but it was intimate and fun regardless! Plus seeing Tom Temprano dance around in little booty shorts and a wig was just darling (VOTE for him for College Board 2016 people!!). AND – I finally played alongside Vin Sol (who is a pretty DAMN popular dj as well) and we danced to the highlight song of the day, Teardrops (see below)! (Vin dates my hairstylist, Rachel, and I think they are absolutely adorbs.) It was a fab weekend with friends, drag, and dancing!

I’ve arrived, people.

ENJOY! Disco and love for all ❤
